Our Workshop On Self-Defense Against Rape For Women & Girls

Violence against women and girls remains a problem of pandemic proportion despite the growing campaign against it. The lockdowns imposed by the federal and states governments across the country to curtail the spread of COVID-19, caused a spike in rape incidents that targeted women and children. This was because the restrictions forced vulnerable persons to stay more closely to their attackers. For this reason, Emerging Genderplus Outreach Team with support from LEAP AFRICA’ Youth Day of Service (YDOS) project, organized a workshop on Self-Defense against Rape for Women and Girls in August, 2020. This was because our team of volunteers agreed that self-defense training for women and girls should be part of any sexual violence prevention efforts. The Workshop had 2 specialized women instructors who plainly helped participants learn that their bodies are more valuable than the culture of violence against them, hence the need for the women and girls to learn the tactics that can help them protect themselves by striking vulnerable areas of an assailant’s body as hard as they can and get out of a dangerous situation. The workshop allowed the women and girls to increase self-confidence and skills and enhance their sense of personal power and a message, that women and girls are not object for men’s abuse.
