Our Workshop On Gender Equality Education For Young Men and Boys

Emerging Genderplus Outreach Team organized a one-day training in September 2020, with the support of Global Rights, YOUTHHUBAFRICA and Young Men’s Network against SGBV to engage young men in Gwagwalada, Abuja on dismantling sexual and gender based violence through its workshop on gender equality education for young men. The Executive Director and Chief Volunteer Officer of Emerging Genderplus Outreach Team, Aaron Egot, said if we do not effectively reach men and boys, many of the efforts to end gender inequalities will be either thwarted or simply ignored, because men are the gatekeepers of current gender orders, hence, have an important role to play against gender based violence. Egot said, he hopes that the workshop would help young men and boys commit to protect and defend the rights of women and girls in their villages. The Workshop explicitly guided men and boys to reflect on how their conceptions of masculinity are influenced by unequal gender norms and encouraged them to move from harmful to positive definitions of what it means to be a man, such as being involved in care-giving and other domestic work. Several attendees at the workshop argued that it is not just men and boys who internalize harmful gender norms, but that women and girls provides the atmosphere based on their flawed understanding of masculinity and femininity. However, participants noted that Gender equality cannot be achieved without the involvement of men and boys. The workshop was attended by 32 young people. Over the course of the three hours workshop, participants were equipped to stand against SGBV, VAWG and HP. As a demonstration of our credibility, participants requested to be admitted into the Young Men’s Network against Sexual and Gender Based Violence; a platform for young male leaders to challenge cultural perceptions and stereotypes that fuel gender-based violence (especially with sexual related violent) and oppression against women and girls while influencing attitudes and behaviors in their various communities as change agents. Remarkably, the Gwagwalada Chapter of the Young Men’s Network against Sexual and Gender Based Violence was inaugurated by Shamaki Dalton, National Coordinator of the Network with Aaron Egot as Coordinator and Chima Igwe as Secretary of the new chapter. Members of the Gwagwalada chapter included young men from the University of Abuja and College of Education Zuba, Community Youths, Security Officers and Artisans. Emerging Genderplus Outreach Team is working with these men and boys to advance gender equality and end violence against women, girls and children.
